I have recently recieved a call from my accountant informing me i have a tax enquiry. I have not recieved this notice as i have moved home twice in a short space of time. My accountant has went away on holiday and Im left no knowing what to do. I do not have the reciepts for the expenses for the year in question due to the move and worried that this will make the inland revenue extend the enquiry beyond the 1 year, I am know PAYE but worried this will escalate, is this likely? Should I wait for the return of my accountant or seek advice elsewhere?
Any advice would be appreciated as Im extremely worried and not sure if I should be.
Thanks

Trace your IR offive via your NI number and informthem of your accountants absence and a date you will get back to them. Then write to that office repeating the information and send it recoded delivery. Regards Peter

HMRC will have to issue a valid enquiry notice to you prior to 31st January 2007 if the enquiry is into the year to 5th April 2005. So I would make sure that you contact them prior to then so that you keep yourself right and don't delay it too long or they might contend that you have been negligent in not providing them with the information necessary to enable them to issue a valid notice.
see this link re validity of notice and possible problems for both HMRC & yourself
