I thought it might be helpful to some others to summarise the results of the investigation I asked for help on previously. It was found that I had made a mistake with respect to not reporting income. This was related to poor information from my employer relating to apportionment for time spent overseas.
I handled it myself and was very open about the mistakes. I was found to have been negligent but received a full reduction for cooperation and disclosure. With a 10% penalty for seriousness. Given that this related to an underpayment amount c. £50K, I think this was a pretty good result.
In some ways I was fortunate in that the mistake was very clear and I could admit it in the very first response to the tax office.
