HMRC opening new investigation

An enquiry into my personal tax return for Apr 2002-Apr 2003 was concluded a few days ago and a settlement agreed. Now I have received notice that HMRC are enquiring into my company's accounts for Nov 2004-Oct 2005. In addition they have asked for me to supply personal bank and credit card details on a voluntary basis for 2 tax years from Apr 2004-Apr 2006.
Should I supply these? How can personal details falling outside the period of the company investigation form part of that investigation? The letter does not say that they are starting another investigation into my personal tax returns. I am inclined to send only my personal bank statements for the period Nov 2004 to Oct 2005.
Please, if anyone has any advice on this matter I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Send nothing and ask them if they are aware of the personal enquiry just concluded. If so then would they please provide their reasons for requesting your personal banking accounts - not only for the enquiry period but additionally for an earlier period as clearly they must have some reason for asking for these at the outset of the enquiry.
See the link

and I would suggest that you (and/or) your professional advisor need the services of a tax investigation specialist.

you can find one by using the lnk "Find A Professional" in the "Help" section on the right of the screen

Thanks for the advice.
I think they are very much aware of the personal enquiry just concluded because the signatory on the new letter is the same person.
Not only that but they appear rather lazily to have cut-and-pasted from previous correspondence because the letter just received is dated 2006!
The text actually says that 'personal records are being requested on a voluntary basis at this stage....based on the risks and adjustments into your 2004 self-assessment'.

Thank again. I have made an appointment with a chartered tax adviser.

Stellad.
This is not intended to be a criticism but, having received good tips from Wamstax, I'm surprised that you never asked him to undertake this job for you? I particularly liked his words 'send them nothing' - there's clearly no messing with him.

Thanks TH
Maybe I'm too experienced for Stella and of course she will get what she pays for. I just hope that she doesn't have to come back to me in the long run

Yes it is good to be given the chance of the work but this site is really my hobby and as usual all the practitioners don't do it for guaranteed work.

Stella I assume that you consider a chartered tax adviser is better for what you want. Maybe maybe not..... Of course no hard feelings and appreciate your thanks.
