If the Tax office find that a tax payer has underdeclared his income, how many previous years Returns can they look back into?

In answer to your question, usually six, but sometimes can go back up to 20 dependent on the nature of the 'underdeclaration'.

If I have not paid tax or national insurance for about 15 years because i have been working an equal time rotation in the middle east and africa and getting paid from the US & the middle east. Will they still only go back 6 years. I want to come in from the cold.
