My mother died feb 2011

i have just received a tax bill asking for £900

owed by my mother ,

i have explaned that there was no estate left, no money,and she lived in a council house

can they expect me to pay this amount

thanks for any reply's

No, they will have to write it off. The estate is liable, and if the estate has no money then HMRC will not be paid. They cannot transfer liability to relatives.

Did your mother leave a will and if so who were her executors.

Was probate obtained?
