OAP Under investigation

Hi, would like some help, i am an OAP and was self employed but retired 20 yrs ago. My only income is 2 small pensions.

HMRC have requested all stements for 2011 which i have supplied and they are now asking further questions about some payments that were made totalling about 15,000. I have received the corresponding amount back into my account.

I cannot remember the payments and cannot now check paypal. What can i do ? Am sure it was a family member who had used it and paid the money back to me but dont want to get them in trouble.

I dont want any more issues, what information should i give them.

Am really confused about this situation

Why can't you check paypal?

HMRC would not have asked for bank statements back to 2011 unless they had some information that suggested you had income that you have not told them about. Not remembering about £15,000 will not wash with them.

You do not say when the investigation started and it may be that HMRC were only working undr what was called the discovery provisions.

Perhaps it might do you some use to read the "Dont let them bully you" link on www.wamstaxltd.com HOWEVER as bd6759 says they likely have information that suggests that you have not declared taxable income of some sort for the year they requested your information

well it was used to purchase goods but it was refunded back to me

so i had an initial letter 5 weeks ago for my statements and i sent this in. I received a second letter asking for information on one statement that showed 15k coming in and the same going out. The going out was to paypal and was payments helping a family member buy things and they then refunded me

i dont know what the purchases are for as it was 5 or 6 payments totalling the 15k and it was 4 years ago

Can i say it was to help a familiy member who then refunded me for this
