Not paid income tax in 8 years

Postby AlexLong » Tue Jun 11, 2019 12:36 pm

Hi,

I am just about to start paying income tax again (via self assessment) after 8 years of being out of the system.

I am wondering if HMRC will automatically ask where I have been and why I have not submitted anything to them at all for 8 years?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I would doubt HMRC will care unless there's something to suggest you should have been in SA all along.

If you know you shouldn't have been then don't sweat it. An 8 year gap must be common where someone stays home until the youngest kid is ready for school.

OTOH, if you know you should have been paying tax but have been evading it then HMRC have 20 years to come after you (and at the most extreme, a prison sentence awaits)
