Interest on savings

Postby kanrent » Fri Apr 07, 2023 4:09 pm

Hi can anyone tell me if I can use my £12,570 personal allowance against my building society interest?
I have a state pension of £4,700 per year
And building society interest £15,000
19,700 in total.

You can use your personal allowance, savings allowance and savings nil rate band.

So my personal saving allowance is £1000 and my personal allowance is £12,570 that = £13,570 so I pay tax on £6,130 at 20% is that correct?

No.
You pay tax at 0% on £5,000, and at 20% on £1,130

Indeed. And the poster might like to consider avoiding that tax in future by moving some of his capital to a Cash ISA (or even Premium Bonds).
An easy way to check Cash ISA interest rates is to use https://moneyfactscompare.co.uk/isa/
