Company distributed "return of capital" on stock shares

Postby abramov111 » Wed Oct 16, 2024 11:15 pm

I've received a return of capital on stock shares from TRI (Thomson Reuters) last year. The operation was combined with a stock buyback. The company distributed around 4$ per share but at the same time reduced the number of shares investors held to maintain the same balance. The released circular only describes that this distribution should not have Canadian tax implications (neither income nor CGT).

I'm not sure how to treat this "capital distribution" on self assessment tax return?

In my understanding this would more fit as a sell event and count towards capital gains/losses but when I asked my broker they just vaguely said that this should be treated as income. If so, then how to declare that on SA? Should it be added up along with other dividends?

Hi A,

Is this a UK tax/Self Assessment question?

With regards,

Yes, the question is about UK tax return.
