I watched a Utube thingy about the ownership of West Ham and one of the strengths of AS is apparently she sits on the board and listens to all sides of the equation before making decisions. Perhaps those in charge of HMRC could take their fingers which have been placed in their ears for over a decade and listen and respond and act on concerns. I've heard nothing from J-PM about the problems HMRC are having make this work..perhaps an apology especially given the billions of our money they are wasting on this.

Funniest part is the 'it will give people a better tax estimate'.

Two sources, two separate licences, two separate reports: each come up with their own estimate. Other income (non MTD stuff) not included in calculations....

It's about is incorrect as it can get.

So nine submissions instead of one, 8 of which are completely useless

Problem with repayments for 2025/2026?
Is there a problem with repayments where clients have registered for MTD 2026/2027?

I have submitted two tax 2025/2026 returns where clients have overpaid; they have also submitted their first MTD returns for 2026/2027. The overpayment amounts are shown as "available for repayment" but nothing is happening despite calls to HMRC and repeated requests online.

Any one else having the same issue?

MTD Filing and Taxcalc today
Issues with filing MTD through TAxcalc today?

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone else are having difficulties today with MTD and Taxcalc. I have added a client today and when trying to link them to HMRC nothing appears to be happening apart from a sync time which was running for more than 15 minutes before I gave up. When submitting another clients MTD return, it rejected (which appears to be a known error) but on resubmission im just getting a spinning processing icon. It isnt showing as submitted on the submission screen just in progress. I couldnt find anything on HMRC showing down time, and the waiting period for taxcalc help at the moment is extremely long, so i thought I would try here first.

Perhaps there was a reason why Carter said HMRC systems should be fully tested before going live....MP Murray it was your call to press ahead.

It's apparently a problem with HMRC's MTD/Fetch API system. I have a bunch of quarterly submissions to send in and am on holiday for the next 3 days. Very annoying. And it's still down about 8 hours after it started.

Of 9060 who completed the poll in the Telegraph, 4% said MTD was helpful.
Surely only those with a sense of adventure and a lot of spare time will allow their clients to make their own QUs?

I tried my first submission from Taxcalc on Thursday last and I got error 200. The submission is showing as fulfilled at HMRC but no figures available to look at the submission detail. Taxcalc is hanging in that it still thinks there is a submission to file whilst at the same time is showing it has been fulfilled. I tried to contact Taxcalc by phone on Thursday no luck. Sent 2 different tickets to them with the issue and 2 different solutions offered - neither of which look credible to me. Submitted one through Xero and no issues at all. I'm not happy. Stressful enough as it is. Thank goodness no fines.

Ah, c'mon ... "Remember that we're all learning together."

[although those wearing L-plates at HMRC are being *paid* for the baptism by fire approach that's the result of them launching without being ready ... as are, to a lesser degree, the software developers - but no-one's reimbursing the Agents let alone the taxpayers whose time is wasted through those things "coming out of the woodwork"!]

Not a good look for Labour PM Andy Burnham on holiday, whilst taxpayers and their accountants struggle with a non-functioning MTD4IT reporting system that MP Murray said was ready.

It's a mess up by HMRC that they are working on fixing (still). In particular, it appears to occur if you change the reporting type to calendar and then bank to standard.

VT works the same way as Quickbooks in this regard. It won't let you submit unless the start date agrees with the obligation start date reported by HMRC (that is 1 April). HMRC then reject the submission reporting that it has the wrong start date (as 6 April is what is really correct)!

In VT, you can overcome this by holding down the shift key when choosing the Submit command.

There is a bit of history on this. Originally, HMRC intended that when a taxpayer changed from standard to calendar quarters or vice versa, the first day of the reporting period would not change in the first year of the change (I'm not sure why). Several months ago that policy changed. It looks to me that the HMRC programmers correctly changed the code for going from standard to calendar quarters but not in the reverse direction.

How MTD reached its first deadline in chaos
by Molly Macfarlane
The first Making Tax Digital quarterly deadline is just one day away, and the run-up has been anything but smooth. Any Answers from the past month paints an unsurprising picture of chaos.

6th Aug 2026
Any Answers from June showed that accountants constantly have to pick up the pieces whenever Making Tax Digital for income tax (MTD) throws up an issue.

Accountants were concerned as problems with logins, authorisations and software started taking up more of their time. But not to worry, they still had two months to go…

The question that kept coming up was what would happen when the filing window opened, and people flooded in to use the systems. July has given us the answer, and I don’t think anyone’s surprised.

The deadline is now just a day away, and Any Answers has once again proved that a string of standalone issues has grown into something much bigger.

Oh MTD, what are we going to do with you?

Scrap it!
