Cgt on gifted rental property

Postby vik2001 » Fri May 29, 2020 6:12 pm

My brother and me owned a rental property.
A few years back i gifted it back to him and removed myself from deeds. Him and his wife then both moved in their as their main residence.

Did i have to pay cgt on this disposal of my share on the property back to him? . There was no money exchanged as it was simply gifted back to him.

It is quite likely that CGT would be due if the property was stood at a gain at the time. Any CGT would be reduced by capital expenditure, PPR or lettings relief if available and any unused annual exemption. You should probably get advice on what exposure to CGT you might have. On the bright side, HMRC haven't identified any problem first. Good luck; I hope it works out to be a non event for you...
