Tax on financing receipt/payments from commodities trades

Postby knowlm » Wed May 19, 2021 9:00 am

Hi there,
This is a super specialist question, so hopefully someone can throw some light.

I hold commodities positions (gold, oil, Volatility) in a CFD account at Gain Capital. Depending on the shape of the futures curve, these attract either a financing debit or credit. As the product is essentially a derivative which holds the nearest few months of commodity futures and depending on whether the market is in backwardation or contango delivers positive or negative income.

Whilst I can account for any buys and sells in the underlyer for CGT I have no idea how to treat these payments. Should they be income, should they all be added up and factored in to the sale price?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
