Can you defer part of a Capital Gain by making an EIS investment or do you have to invest an amount equal to the initial gain.

Thank you for the link.
It doesn’t actually say that you can defer part of the gain but doesn’t say you can’t. I have read equally unclear descriptions elsewhere hence my question. It is quite feasible I’m not seeing the wood for the trees. I believe the answer is yes you can defer part of the gain !

These parts are relevant
To obtain full Deferral Relief you must invest an amount at least equal to the chargeable gain.
You may claim less than the maximum Deferral Relief, for example, if you want to use your annual exempt amount to cover part of your gains
You can defer any part of a gain up to the maximum of the amount invested in EIS.
