Forming a School Company or Community Interest Company

Postby LorraineSBM » Fri Oct 24, 2025 12:40 am

Hi!
We are a maintained school in England seeking to form a School Community or Community Interest Company to deliver: 1. Private Tuition after school to children in the local community as a separate company and identity than the school 2. A gym with members from the local community, staff, and parents for the wellbeing and health of the local community to use a building on the school site that is not used because of falling pupil numbers in the borough.

What would our VAT status be? In these scenarios how do we set up VAT accounts with HMRC to make sure we are paying the right VAT? Many thanks
