Carers allowance vs new sole trader

Postby LucyC » Tue Aug 06, 2024 1:48 pm

For 3 months this tax year I was a carer for my father, whilst starting an online business the year before as a sole trader for the first time.
I had to neglect my business to take care of my father during that time, but after checking I see that I was making over £150 after expenses, but from the neglect I had not yet paid some further service expenses that would bring me well under the £150,
Am a correct in thinking that as I had not paid off these expenses during that 3 month period (even if it was from being busy with the care element) that I would not qualify for carers allowance now or is there some way around this paying the expenses off after the dates?
Thank you!

Generally, to qualify for Carers Allowance, you need to be earning under £132 per week (as of 2024/25 tax year) AFTER expenses. If your actual net earnings were technically over that during those 3 months, you might have an issue.
