Can a self employed person work for only 1 person, provided the self employed person does declare his or hers earnings to the inland revenue

Whether or not you are an employee or self employed depends on the facts. Generally speaking if there is a master/servant relationship and you are the servant then you are an employee. You cannot simply register as self employed and be treated in that way by HMRC -you have to be truly self employed. Where one person works solely for one other person that is a factor that would tip the scale in favour of being an emaployee and not self employed. More facts would be required to answer the question - on the basis of the limited information available - probably employee.

But if the person you worked for didn't mind you going off when ever you wanted to do your own work and welcomed you back for labour only work, especially when you have not been long established as a self employed company and rely on someone like this to keep you going.
