Hi

To start off, i'm 16 and new to all the tax world. I've just started my first job and yesterday got my first pay slip. I work part time, but whilst i'm waiting for college to start i'm doing some extra hours.

I brought in £338 over the 4 weekly pay. And just under £75 was taken off for tax. To me that seemed a bit much, besides i was under the impression i would't be taxed anyway.

I'd appriciate if anyone could help me on the matter.

Mike

If this is a summer/part time job prior to college then you should have completed a form P38S for your employer who should not deduct tax.

yes sounds like you are being taxed on a BR code ie basic rate code.Get the important forms sent off and you will get your tax back automatically through your payslip.

You don't want a P38 if you are working all year round. You need to complete for P46 whcih your employer should have given you to fill in on your first day. This form will then allow HMRC to issue you with a tax code and your employer should then deduct the correct amount of tax - which if your earnings are less than £5035 pa should be zero.
P46 is also available from HMRC website.
Your employer will need to send it to the tax office once you have signed it. You should then get your tax refunded through the payroll once your tax code is in place.
