Consultancy work but full time employed

Postby masteroats » Mon Jun 06, 2016 3:39 pm

Hi,

I did some consultancy work for a company for a couple of weeks before starting a full time job. I'm not sure what steps I have to take with regards to charging for the consultancy work (approx. 4k) - I expect this to be just a one-off as my current job clearly doesn't allow conflicts of interests.

I'm obviously happy to pay all taxes owed but don't know if I can just issue an invoice and declare the income or if I have other obligations.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you did not agree with the company how and when you were to be paid, they might decide not to pay you

When I did consultancy work I just reported it on my tax return as self-employed income, and claimed any legit expenses against it. I don't remember being asked to pay NICs, but then I was paying employment NICs anyway. Maybe the DWP would tell you about any NIC obligations you might have?

Thanks both. Apologies for the slow reply - I didn't get email notifications.

Theres no chance of them not paying - theyre just waiting for the invoice.

@ Strawn, can I ask what info you included on your invoice then please?
