How long does HMRC take before issuing a self-assessment tax-clearance?

If you file and return for self-assessment in January (on or before the 31st), when does HMRC approve (or otherwise) of this return?

HMRC does not "approve" or "accept" your return. How could they? They don't know if it correct.

When you complete a tax return online HMRC will calculate your tax liability at that time. However, HMRC state that your Tax records will be updated within 72 hours.
Unless HMRC come back to you with a query, which could be at any time, you can assume that they have accepted your tax return.

Ok, thanks for all the answers/help.
one last question on this. Do they issue a certificate, or anything to that effect? If I was applying for a loan or mortgage, etc, is there anything I can present to a bank or building society to show I am paying my taxes, etc?
Again, thanks in advance for your answers.

There isn't anything that HMRC will send you. Best bet, if it comes up, is to give the mortgage company a copy of your tax return. (which you can print off online, assuming you did it online)

The mortgage company might ask for something from a qualified accountant in which case you'll have to pay someone to review your accounts.
