Allowance for working from home

Postby Bluefox » Tue Jan 22, 2019 4:38 pm

I am in the process of completing my self assessment for 2017/18. My employer remained the same as the previous year but from early in 2017 it was agreed that I would work from home instead of going into the office. I did this for the entire tax year, working 15 hours per week. I believe that I can claim a flat rate of £4 per week towards home office costs but I cannot see where I enter this on the online self assessment form. Could someone please advise me.

You cannot claim any expense for this.

Why not? I know other people who work from home who have told me that they claim some of the costs for having a home office

Because you have agreed this with your employer. This implies that you could have worked at the employers office instead. That mean the cost is not "necessary", an unavoidable condition which is imposed by statute.
