Tax code issues with self assessment - help

Postby JoBo1 » Sat Jan 04, 2020 9:11 pm

Hi
P60 shows tax code for 2019 tax year end 1222L. Tax return shows personal allowance as £11850 so in the calculation is showing £147 tax is due but hasnt taken into account the additional tax free allowance showing in the tax code.

Can this be reduced via the tax return and if so - what boxes do I need to complete?

Thank you in advance

Depends why the tax code is 1222L

You'd need to see a breakdown of the code. Has HMRC sent you anything?

You may be able to see the breakdown of your code on your online HMRC account.

HMRC will also confirm over the phone what the adjustment to your tax code was (and why it was implemented) if you ring them and pass security.

Your tax code is simply a provisional attempt to collect the correct amount of tax.

If you have completed your return correctly then the £147 shown as due will be correct*

If you have completed your return correctly and your current tax code is 1287L (or very similar to this) then you might need to get HMRC to review and update your tax code to stop further arrears building up from now on.

*there are a few situations where your calculation may be incorrect but that would be unrelated to the issue you are asking about

If I submit SA now would I be too late for them to adjust my code? I would need to pay £147 before end of January is my understanding.
