Confused over Gift Aid on Self Assessment return

Postby robbo777 » Sat Jan 18, 2020 8:09 pm

Hello,

In the 2017/18 tax year I made charitable donations (Gift Aid payments) of £4000, and brought forward a further £3000 from the following year (2018/19) so I put these two separate amounts in the appropriate separate boxes on my 2017/18 return. I had not brought any Gift Aid payments forward in any previous years.

I'm now doing my return for for 2018/19, and my total Gift Aid payments during the tax year to 5/4/19 were £4500, but of course I have already declared £3000 of that in last year's return.

So, I need to put an amount in the box that asks for 'Gift Aid payments made in the year to 5 April 2019'. This is Box 5 on my return

I also need to put an amount in the box that asks for 'Gift Aid payments made in the year to 5 April 2019 but treated as if made in the year to 5 April 2018'. This is Box 7 on my return.

I know I have to put £3000 in the second box, but what do I put in the first box? £4500 or £1500?

Thanks for your assistance.

You could explain your entries in the White Space of the Return if you wish to avoid confusion.

Thank you both for your advice.

Yes, I will put the higher amount in the box and also explain my entries in the white box or in an attachment.

Thanks again.
