How can I find out if I need to file a tax return?

As far as I'm aware, you only need to file a tax return if HMRC tell you you need to.

But you need to tell HMRC if you have untaxed income or insufficiently taxed income, or untaxed capital gains etc and at that point they'll decide if you need to do a tax return.

I'm not sure it's a requirement but you should probably also tell them if your income is going to be over 100K. I'm pretty sure they want a TR from everybody like that.

(You can also ask HMRC to send you a tax return if you've paid too much tax. I think sometimes this can be a bit of a challenge)

I thought there were certain triggers such as salary and other income sources that meant you had to enrol for self assessment. Have a look here and see what the outcome is.
