Do I need to fill out Self Assessment as non-resident?

Postby eivo14 » Mon Dec 13, 2021 9:01 am

Hi - for the tax year April 2020 to April 2021 I was a non-resident in the UK (spent 0 days in the UK). I also received no income at UK source.

I was however working full-time abroad (in the US), and this was my only source of income.

Do I need to fill out a tax return for this year?

Thanks!

If you are sent a Tax Return by HMRC in principle it needs completing even if it's returned as a "Nil" return ie no entries.

Otherwise, as a non-UK resident with no UK source income/gains no Tax Return needs completion.

Beyond the UK you would be filing a US income tax return reporting worldwide income & financial assets. This may include UK pension plans & ISAs, even if they are generating no income currently.
