state pension from australia

Postby aussie2 » Mon Oct 06, 2025 1:35 pm

I am British,I returned from australia to live in UK 10year ago, I had my aus.state pension sent here, I was unaware that I should tell the HMRC when I done this I have also a small uk pension, the combined amount had never gone over the threshold amount so I have never done a self assess until this year , I believed I would be taxed the same as anyone else in UK.so, I registered for self assesst , the registration has it classed as foreign income and may be treated differently....its only my state pension not a private pension and it is not taxed in Aus and my yearly income until now has been under the threshold. in the uk.....how will my income be taxed

Pension income is treated as income in the normal way so you would only have a tax liability if your total income (including this, your other small pension and any UK state pension) exceeds the personal allowance of £12,570. You'll pay 20% tax over this.

And you need to tell HMRC if you have income that is insufficiently taxed. So if your total income was less than the personal allowance then you didn't need to tell HMRC about it.
