Pension withdrawal

Postby Dapperdee62 » Fri Jul 17, 2026 3:45 pm

My wife has a private pension which she has drawn out her 25% tax free.
If she draws out some of the rest we know we have to pay tax on it, but if it then takes her over her tax allowance for the year do we then have to pay tax again on it.
She gets approximately £11500 on her state pension, her allowance is £12750.
Appreciate any advice thank you

Your wife will owe tax on any income over £12750, so if she withdraws £5000 that will take her income to £16500, assuming she has no other income. She will then be subject to tax on £3750.

UK pension companies will deduct tax on behalf of HMRC, so she may find she owes nothing when calculating her return.
