Hello, I posted this a while ago in General but didn't get any replies, so trying it again here.
I am non UK resident for tax, but a British citizen. I have some UK rental income which means I currently need to complete a UK tax return.
I am trying to find out if income from investments, ETF funds either UK or foreign domiciled need to be reported on my tax return, dividends or gains. I'm just talking about reporting not working out if any tax is due I can use reporting software for that.
According to ChatGPT If shares/ETF are UK domiciled I don't need to include dividend or gains (CGT) on my tax return, unless its from UK property/land or property rich, even if I already do a return.
For foreign domiciled again chatGPT says I do not need to include at all in my tax return.
I have contacted HMRC to confirm and after they checked with a technician I was told " If you are non resident you are only required to report the property income, as it arises in the UK", but when I confirmed it back to them I was sent a document relating to foreign income for uk residents which was not relevant at all to my question, after checking again I was sent a document about temporary non residents tax and then was sent a document about non doms, none of this was related and made me doubt the advice, in the end was told they couldn't help anymore and I was advised to contact the digital assistant and ask speak to a technician directly.
A real person on the digital assistant first said that if that's what the technician said it must be right (I don't think the technician is wrong but maybe they were asked the wrong question), she said the link says you have to fill in SA if you are uk resident and have foreign income or capital gains but "I imagine that is not applicable to you". In the end she said she would get a technician to contact me but the system was not working today and I needed to contact back next week, I have been trying to contact but with no luck so far.
So in summary...
As a non resident do I need to include on my tax return, Dividends or gains from UK domiciled companies, Dividend or gains from foreign domiciles companies (e.g. Ireland domiciled ETF).
