Inheritance from Overseas taxed in there UK?

Postby PPitstop » Thu Jan 23, 2025 2:52 pm

Hi all,
I am UK resident and I will be due a decent amount of inheritance from my parents who live overseas (non British citizens nor residents).

There is no inheritance tax in their country, but do I pay any IHT on that inheritance here as the recipient?

I am not sure if this is now going to be taxed as part of the Chancellors targeting of Non-Doms and worldwide income (even tho it is not quite the same)!

Appreciate any advice, thanks

No, it is the estate that is subject to inheritance tax, not the heirs.

The estate is only subject to tax if:

- the assets are located in the UK;
- the assets include shares or loans deriving their value from UK residential property; or
- the deceased was domiciled in the UK.

Assuming your parents are still alive, "domicile" will shortly be replaced by "long-term UK resident" meaning (loosely) somebody who has been here for 10 years.
