Replacement Business Relief (BR or BPR). How much evidence needed?

Postby dominoman » Thu May 28, 2020 9:54 am

I am currently completing IHT412 (unlisted stocks and shares and control holdings) and would appreciate some advice on how to document Replacement Business Relief.

My late father held shares that qualified for BR, and many were sold 2-3 years before he died. The money was reinvested in other investment which would qualify for BR. Under the replacement BPR a significant amount was invested.

For the IHT412 how much evidence of this "trail of money" do I need to provide. Is it enough to state the shares and say what they replaced (in some cases on sell is replaced with 2-3 other buys so it all get's a bit complicated). I've logged it all in spreadsheets to check it is correct but should I provide all this to HMRC with the probate forms, or keep them and supply only if asked?

Basically, I'm looking for advice on how best to evidence replacement BR?

Thanks!

No evidence is required for the claim. If HMRC ask for it, then you have sufficient detail.
With a pinch of salt take what I say, but don't exceed your RDA
