How long to keep documents following probate

Postby sigmund » Sun Nov 08, 2020 6:18 pm

Can anyone advise me with the following please. Having been granted probate for my wife and having distributed the estate (I was the sole executor and beneficiary hence no IHT to pay), for how long do I have to keep all the documents, payment details, receipts, accounts, copies of IHT400 and schedules etc. before they can be destroyed. Presumably I have to keep the details of her unused IHT allowance until I die, but how about the rest of the paper?

If its anything like record keeping requirements it would be 5/6 years. Although if iht is payable they say keep records for 20 years, which is strange for a tax that only brigs in 0.5% of there revenue but thats another story.

Most advise 20 years ( which is how far HMRC can go back)

With a pinch of salt take what I say, but don't exceed your RDA

Many thanks. I did not realise it would be as long as that. Probably be dead by then
