My wife paid National insurance for 6 years prior to emigrating to Australia in 1979. No further payments have been made since. We are considering retiring to the UK in 2010. Is it possible to make Class 3 voluntary contributions so she would be eligible for a percentage of the basic pension.

You will need to contact the Inland Revenue National Insurance Contributions office to see whether see is eligible to contribute, although as you have not been resident here for so long I would doubt that they would want to allow this.

my knowledge is a bit rusty, but when I worked in NI, the rule was that one could only go back six years in making voluntary, or Class 3 contributions, therefore your wife could only buy the qualifying years from 98-2004. Not sure if this is still the case.
