Employee Expenses, Non Reimbursed Relocation

Postby BEEMA7 » Mon Jan 21, 2019 12:00 pm

Employee took up new job out of area (80 miles round trip per day) as Employer could not get anyone else as qualified, due to location (rural area)
Employee rented house for 6 months (temp 6 month lease) and put own (mortgaged) house up for sale.
Employer not reimbursed relocation/rent costs, which over the period of 6 months, exceed £5000
Employee unable to sell house and due to costs involved in renting aswell as mortgage, employee now commutes, costing nearly £300 in fuel alone, which again is not reimbursed by Employer
No claim for travel (as home to work, and office based)
Would there be sufficient argument with HMRC (if enquiries made), claiming the Relocation costs on a Self Assessment Return
Unable to find any information or HMRC cases
Comments appreciated

Unfortunately you can't claim tax relief on your relocation expenses on your self assessment tax return...

Could you please be more specific and explain why a claim cannot be made, main residence address was changed with HMRC, new abode was within walking distance of office, whereas old residence was not
This did not apply to any other employee so would not be the norm
Any such case law

Only reimbursed qualifying relocation expenses are exempt from tax (first £8000). Key word is reimbursed, it's not a deduction.
