Employer mistake on P11d

Hi, my employer has made a mistake calculating my BIK in relation to private medical insurance for the previous tax year. They have just notified me and informed me they will be deducting the shortfall from my salary at the end of the month.

Question is, are they entitled to do this? It was their mistake. They have simply given me a figure they will be deducting rather than any precise figures or detailed explanation.

Ask them for their calculation.

If it’s too much to deduct on one pay day, ask them to spread the recovery over a number of pay days.

Additionally, your employer should give you reasonable notice before making any deductions from your salary. Ideally, they should discuss the matter with you in advance and agree on a repayment schedule that is fair and reasonable.
