Hi tax friends

From 1 April 2022 working from home relief isn't available if you choose to work from home, only if you have to.

For those under PAYE, how will HMRC know the code includes WFH relief to be able to then remove it? They won't know if coded expenses of say £322 could be all genuine expenses, or £10 genuine and £312 WFH not due. There's not that much publicity for people to check this themselves?

HMRC know that it was in your 2021-22 code because you asked them to put it there.

Yep I see, thanks for so they don't roll it forward to 22-23 - that makes sense.

It is the responsibility of the employee to ensure that their tax code accurately reflects their tax situation. When an employee receives their tax code from HMRC, it is important that they check it to ensure that it is correct.

If an employee believes that their tax code includes working from home relief when it should not, they should contact HMRC to have it corrected. This can be done by phone or through the online HMRC account.

It is important to note that HMRC may carry out checks to ensure that expenses claimed by employees are genuine and in line with the rules. If an employee is found to be claiming expenses that are not genuine, they may face penalties and interest charges, as well as having to pay back any tax that they owe.

Therefore, it is important for employees to keep accurate records of their expenses and to only claim for expenses that are genuinely incurred in the course of their work.
