UK Domicile status

Postby kevincab » Wed Nov 29, 2017 7:43 am

Dear all,

I have doubts about the my domiciled status. I'm the UK citizen but I was born in Hong Kong. I did not live in UK since I was born and will go to work in UK on next year.

I want t o confirm whether I will automatically become UK domiciled person when I start working in UK. I have no intention to stay in UK permanently, but I think I will stay for quite a long time still.

Many thanks.

You acquired a domicile of origin at the date of your birth. It would be that of your father at that time (assuming you were born legitimate).

If he had a HK domicile then you will acquire that, if he had a UK domicile then you will have acquired that although by now that may have been displaced on your part by a HK domicile of choice.

Coming to work in the UK will not precipitate a UK domicile.
