Any tax reliefs/expenses for a place rented purely for work?

Postby taxisconfusing » Sat Jun 01, 2019 11:28 pm

Hi,

New job in a different city. Permanent employee. Will be renting a place to stay there mon-thurs. Can the rent, train ticket, etc be expensed against income tax? Are there any tricks at all?

fyi in case there is some kind of cost-offsetting I can do, I rent to two lodgers in my main residence. Can I somehow for example claim the rental cost of the work property as some kind of collective expense on my property income?!

No. Costs of Attending your place of work are not tax deductible.

Could it be considered a property expense that offsets my property income?

No, sorry. There is nothing you can do that will be deductible for tax.

However, the rents you receive from your main residence could be covered by rent-a-room relief provided you continue to occupy the property.

Unfortunately, HMRC take the view that as you could live in a cardboard box on the steps of your new office for free anything you do that creates a cost in terms of living and getting to your employment is a personal indulgence and shouldn't be tax deductible.

Are you proposing that all household expenditure should be tax deductible?

I wasn't proposing anything, I was just giving an exaggerated view of how HMRC perceive people's choices in the real world.

Although, it wasn't so long ago that mortgage interest (the single biggest item of household expenditure for most people) was tax deductible for your home.

You said it was HMRC's view, which suggested you held a different view.

Mortgage interest relief (up to a loan of £30,000 with interest rates at 10%) had to go. The tax paying population was subsidising the acquisition of an asset that would be sold tax free. The alternative would be to allow rent as a tax expense, but that would push rents up.
