Hello
I have paid off the main debt but still owe the penalties.

DO they charge 10 pounds a day for VERY late payment of the penalty part OR do they just apply interest?

Many t hanks

There are no penalties on penalties, I don't believe there is interest either.

Just be sure that HMRC have applied your payments to the tax liability and not to the penalties, leaving the tax outstanding.

The £10 a day penalty you are talking about will almost certainly be the £10 daily late filing penaltiees that apply when a self assessment return is filed over 3 months late - hmrc have been issuing these by the shedload recently - nice of them (not) to wait till the bill is the full £900 before they step into gear and send out bills !!!

3 months late
Daily penalty £10 per day for up to 90 days (max £900)

https://www.rossmartin.co.uk/penalties-a-compliance/721-tax-penalties-self-assessment-late-filing-a-payment-from-201011

This penalty is one of the worst for slightly tardy or not on the ball peeps as penalties are not limited to amount tax due - for people with no ultimate tax bill these panlties are harsh disrimatory and a sledgehammer to crack a nut (IMHO) - IMHO a fair and reasonable middle ground would be on appeal to suspend these panlties for all fisrt tiome offenders as lng as they sign statement to say they know the score and aware they will be treated more heaviliy next time. What gets my goat up here is that hmrc OFTEN stay silent till the full £900 is reached so you ane penalised 90 times if you have forgotten once.
