We were dealing with a tax enquiry for one of our clients and after a meeting with the tax inspector, a 14 days response period was stipulated.

During this period, letters went astray and the inspector concluded the enquiry, and adjustments were made. Procedures for an appeal were also stated in the closing letter.

Has any one come across this situation before & what is the best way forward for this?

What you need to do is lodge an appeal (or appeals) against the closure and any assessments raised. You can then proceed by negotiation in the normal manner or if necessary by going to the Commissioners. It would have been good practice for the Inspector to have contacted you before issuing a closure notice especially after so short a time !

You don't seem to have much alterantive but to appeal.

Why only 14 days to provide the information? Was there a history of delay?
