Am I right in thinking, that for tax year 2004-5 ended 31st January, than the UK IRS can't investigate once 31st January 2007 date slips by ? I want to change Accountants, and am thinking to synchronise timing with this date.

For the tax year 2004/05, you would have had until 31 January 2006 to have filed your tax return. Provided this was done, the Inland Revenue have until 31 January 2007 to make general enquiries into your tax return.

You will however have to file your 2005/06 tax return with the Inland Revenue by 31 January 2007 otherwise you will be subject to a £100 fine.

I trust this helps,

And after 31st Jan'07 it is possible under certain (limited) circumstances that the Inspector may go back to 2004/05 (or earlier years) if he makes a 'discovery' that suggests that an earlier year year should to be re-opened.
