Hello
Can the tax man stop me moving abroad?
I've been planning to move abroad for well over a year now and in the middle of my big plans, the tax man has opened up an enquiry which I had hoped would be all sorted by now.
So far, we've been corresponding via letters and now he wants to meet which I am quite happy about because I just want this resolved. A meeting has been scheduled for a week before I'm due to fly out (great timing I know) and obviously if it can all be sorted out in the one meeting I don't need to divulge my overseas plans.
In case you're wondering, this is a totally legitimate move and has nothing to do with me wanting to flee the country to avoid paying my taxes! It's just bad luck with the timing of it all.
So should I keep quiet unless I have to, and then if I have to mention it e.g. he suggests another meeting after the date I depart, would he have any legal right to stop me from flying.
I have a new job all lined up and loads of meetings scheduled so I can't delay the departure. Equally I don't want to have to fly back thousands of miles for another meeting.
Finally, my accountant has been asked to attend this meeting but he lives miles away and to be honest I don't know if he will be of any great use. All his comments regarding the situation have already been noted in writing and equally I feel confident in being able to answer any questions as I have nothing to hide.
Many thanks
