I am a self-employed freelance worker.
I have been investigated for the last 15 months, and have been investigated 2 times before (1 an short exploratory and 1 an in-depth), I was cleared in both of these. This time the IR has gone into great detail, and has said they want £13,000. I have always had an accountant (just after the 1st two investigations I changed accountants). I have always done my accounting the same way and was and never told to change it, until this investigation, which informed me I wasn't keeping enough details, which I have now changed.
I am not able to provide enough details of income into my bank a/c, the banks records don't go back that far, companies I worked for have gone out of business. I am though able to provide more detailed records of income in the last 15 months (Since the IR told me to change my record keeping). These show I have been paid for expenses (I do not claim for these from the IR) I pay into my bank accounts.

Sometimes companies pay an amount of the expenses before I depart on their programme as a float, and the outstanding amount after the event, some pay after the event, this could be any time between 3 weeks and 2 months before I receive it.

I know this isnÂ’t for the years in question, but hopefully this will show that I do receive floats and expenses from companies, and as I havenÂ’t changed my type of employment for 20 years, this has always been part of the make-up of my job.
I don't know if any one has any suggestion or help. As the IR isn't giving me anymore time I have to decide whether or not to go to the commission.

What does your current accountant have to say, and when was the last in-depth investigation? Presumably he has been dealing with the Revenue throughout and will know whether you have a good case or not and should be able to advise whether to go in front of the commissioners or not?

On the reimbursed expenses side, presumably you count all payments from your clients as income and then deduct in your accounts the expenses incurred?
