A senior member of the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) – the tax campaign organisation – has been appointed to the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC).
Introduction
Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, has announced that Victoria Todd has been appointed to the SSAC. Victoria, along with four other new appointees, Carl Emmerson, Dominic Morris, Charlotte Pickles and Liz Sayce, will take up her five-year term on 1 August 2016 and will continue to work for LITRG.
The SSAC
The SSAC is an independent statutory body that aims to provide impartial advice on social security and related matters. It scrutinises most of the proposed regulations that underpin the social welfare system and undertakes detailed studies as part of its independent work programme, among other activities. It was established in 1980. The Committee meets on a monthly basis and the Chairman is Paul Gray CB.
Victoria Todd and LITRG
Victoria Todd, Senior Technical Manager for LITRG, says she is delighted to be appointed to the SSAC. She adds that the Committee has a vital role to play in providing independent comment and scrutiny on changes to the benefits system and she looks forward to contributing to this work. She hopes that the experience she had gained working on behalf of unrepresented taxpayers and tax credit claimants over the last 12 years will be of benefit to the Committee and its work.
Anthony Thomas, Chairman of LITRG, says that the Group is delighted that Victoria will be able to take her very considerable experience of working to improve the tax policy and processes for the benefit of those on low incomes to such a well-regarded and hugely influential committee. He is sure the Committee will value her experience of working with HMRC and the Treasury, as well as the devolved parliaments and governments. He wishes her well in the new role.
