HMRC have added a number of new Tactical and Information Packages (TIPs) to their website.

TIPS are trade and profession-based notes for internal use by HMRC officers. These notes combine sector/trade information together with tactical information and risk reviews with the primary purpose of supporting compliance activity throughout the department.

The notes are also designed to improve commercial awareness by providing trade- based information on particular business sectors such as trading practices, economic effects, markets, customers, competition and legislation.

The range of TIPs available on the HMRC website is currently quite limited, but will gradually increase over a period of time and where possible,  replace the existing Business Economic Notes (BENs).

TIPS published to date cover the following:

  • Bookmakers;
  • Confectioners, Tobacconists and Newsagents;
  • Construction Industry;
  • Estate Agents;
  • Field Sports;
  • Licesed trade;
  • Mortgage brokers;
  • Franchises; and
  • Waste Disposal and Landfill Sites.

All the TIPs can be found on HMRC's TIPS page.
